Film Information

Language: Hindi

Lyricist: Yogesh

Trishaagni (1988) features one of Salil’s rare late-period Hindi compositions — a song built on an unusual, almost Middle-Eastern melodic structure, sung beautifully by Asha Bhosle.

The film credits list dialogue writers Nabendu Ghosh and K. Shailendra, leading to confusion about whether this is the same Shailendra as the legendary lyricist. No official verification exists.

The Bengali rendition (AN29), sung by Antara Chowdhury in 1991, is widely regarded as the superior version, thanks to richer orchestration and Salil’s trademark structural refinement.

Notes & Background

The sole song of Trishaagni stands apart in Salil’s Hindi catalogue — its modal, Eastern-Arabic phrasing is unusual for him, yet beautifully executed.

Although the Hindi version is striking, many listeners prefer the later Bengali version sung by Antara, which features a more refined arrangement and richer emotions.

As with many late-era Salil works, several production credits remain obscure, including the lyricist attribution and details of the recording session.
