Notes & Background

Taangewaali (1955) is one of Salil Chowdhury’s most vibrant folk-based scores. The influence of Punjabi folk is unmistakable, especially in “Dekho Taangaa Meraa Niraala”, which stylistically resembles O. P. Nayyar’s iconic Punjabi rhythm pieces.

TW3 — “Rimjhim jhim jhim badarvaa barse” has a Bengali antecedent. The original was sung by Dhananjay Bhattacharya in the Bengali film Paasher Baari, becoming a watershed moment in 1950s Bengali modern music.

The playful duet “Teena Tan Taa Teena” (TW4) by Geeta Dutt and Manna Dey survives only in the film. It was never released on records, and since the film is unavailable even on VHS, the audio remains extremely rare.

Salil beautifully blends folk idioms with orchestral sophistication, making Taangewaali a standout score despite the film’s obscurity.
