“Sangat” is one of the rarest Salil Chowdhury Hindi film soundtracks. The film was never properly released, causing its brilliant songs to remain largely unknown to the public. Fortunately, a few EP records and later CMR releases preserved the music.

Notes & Background

“Sangat (1976)” remains one of the most elusive Salil Chowdhury film albums, yet musically one of his finest.

“Kaanha bole naa” (SG1) is a masterpiece — an exquisitely structured composition, rich in harmony and emotion. Had the film been released, this song would surely have become a classic.

“Balmaa moraa aancharaa” (SG2), also a brilliant duet, was preserved only through an EP record and later a much longer CMR version.

“Chal bhai chal” (SG4) exists in two parts and carries the same rustic charm and rhythmic spirit as the famous Bengali song “Paalki Chaley”, though it is not a direct version.

The soundtrack stands as a hidden treasure for Salil admirers.
