Notes & Background

Prem Patra (1962) is a hauntingly beautiful Salil Chowdhury soundtrack, filled with lyrical melancholy and sophisticated orchestration.

The songs were *never released* during the film’s lifetime. After Bimal Roy’s death, the music rights and master tapes remained with his wife, preventing commercial release for decades.

Only “Do ankhiyaan jhuk jhuki si” was initially issued by HMV. Eventually, a full CD was released, revealing the entire treasure.

Salil’s use of choir, strings and flute passages in songs like PP4 and PP5 is masterful, showing his unmatched melodic sensibility in romantic compositions.

Today, the soundtrack is regarded as a lost gem rediscovered — a shining example of Salil’s expressive and emotionally rich music.
