Poonam Ki Raat is one of Salil Chowdhury’s most atmospheric soundtracks — a blend of romance, suspense, and classical beauty. Many consider this one of his finest 1960s scores.

“Tum ye kahaan le chale ho” and “Saathi re” are particularly cherished for their emotional depth and haunting melodic lines.

Notes & Background

The first melodic line of PK4 — “Bhole piyaa” is actually borrowed from the prelude of the iconic Bengali folk-inspired composition “Saat Bhaai Champa, jaagore jaagore” sung by Lata Mangeshkar.

Interestingly, Salil also created a slow Hindi adaptation of the same Bengali classic — “Pyaas liye manwaa” from the film Mere Bhaiyaa.

“Saathi re tujh bin” remains one of Lata’s most haunting renditions under Salil’s baton, carried by a melancholic and beautifully layered orchestral background.

The soundtrack overall is filled with mystery, shadows, and Salil’s trademark harmonic progressions — perfectly matching the film’s suspenseful mood.
