Naani Maa (1980) was produced by the Children’s Film Society of India, one of several CFSI projects that featured music by Salil Chowdhury. Films such as Jawaab Ayega, Udaanchhoo, Netraheen Saakshi, and Triyaatri also carried Salil’s signature melodic style.

The songs are sung by a young Antara Chowdhury, whose innocent, expressive voice became a defining element of Salil’s children-focused compositions during the late 70s and early 80s.

Both tracks feature the gentle melodic charm and emotional simplicity characteristic of Salil’s work for children’s cinema.

Notes & Background

Naani Maa reflects Salil Chowdhury’s sensitive approach to composing for children’s stories — simple on the surface yet rich in emotional depth.

Antara Chowdhury’s clear and innocent vocals remain the highlight, especially in “Jag mei.n hogi kisi ki kahaa.n”, which became popular among children’s audio releases in the early 80s.

Like many CFSI films, Naani Maa had limited circulation, but its songs survive as charming examples of Salil’s ability to adapt his style for younger audiences.
