“Mrigayaa” marked the debut of Mithun Chakraborty, who won the National Award for Best Actor for this film. Though critically acclaimed, the songs composed by Salil Chowdhury were never incorporated into the final cut and remain extremely rare. The soundtrack exists only in documentation — almost nobody has heard the original recordings.

Notes & Background

Mrigayaa (1976) remains one of the rarest entries in Salil Chowdhury’s Hindi filmography. Despite Salil’s involvement, the songs never appeared in the released film or on discs.

The film itself, directed by Mrinal Sen, is a landmark of Indian cinema and introduced Mithun Chakraborty in a powerful role that earned him the National Award.

The two known songs — sung by Rafi and Pankaj Mitra — appear to draw from Eastern Indian folk styles, consistent with the rural setting of the movie.

Unfortunately, the lyricist credit for these songs has been lost. Film archives and collectors continue to search for more information or surviving audio.

If any additional details regarding the lyricist or recordings become available, they can be added to preserve this rare chapter of Salil’s musical legacy.
