Honeymoon (1960)

A beautifully melodic and underrated Salil Chowdhury soundtrack featuring Lata, Mukesh, Sabita Banerji, Usha and Dwijen Mukherji.

Lyricist: Shailendra

Honeymoon (1960) is considered one of Salil’s sweetest and most tuneful albums, blending romance, tenderness and folk influences with trademark Salil harmonies.

Lata’s soft, intimate numbers and Mukesh’s expressive vocals make this soundtrack one of the most melodic offerings of the early 1960s. Sadly, the film and several audio masters remain very difficult to find today.

Notes & Background

Honeymoon is one of Salil’s most melodious and gentle soundtracks. The compositions are warm, intimate and richly arranged.

The standout is undoubtedly “mere khwaabo.n mei.n khayaalo.n mei.n chhupe”, a haunting duet (HM3) that also exists in a rare slow solo version by Lata (HM4), never released on records.

“Aha re magan” (HM2) and “duniyaa na dekhe” (HM5) showcase Salil’s gift for effortless melodic phrasing and orchestral colouring.

The Bengali parallels (RB2, RB5, SS5, OS9) reveal Salil’s habit of reimagining melodies across languages with emotional variations.

Sadly, the original video reels are extremely rare. Only fragments survive through Doordarshan broadcasts and private collectors.
