Chaand Aur Sooraj (1965) features some of Salil Chowdhury’s finest mid-1960s compositions — deeply melodic, intricately arranged, and rooted in Indian classical tradition.

“Baagh mei.n kali khili” and “Jhanana jhanana baaje” are among his absolute favourites — both musically sophisticated and timeless.

Notes & Background

“Baagh mei.n kali khili” is an extraordinary melody — the film version is significantly longer than the truncated HMV release. Salil reused its motif in several background scores and regional songs.

“Jhanana jhanana baaje” is one of Salil’s most beautiful compositions in raag Kalavati (Carnatic Valaji). His clever use of shuddha madhyam in the antara — a note technically outside the raag — creates a magical effect.

“Kisi ne jaadoo kiyaa” (Mukesh) was deleted from the final film, a great loss considering its haunting melody.

Despite limited commercial availability, Chaand Aur Sooraj remains a treasure for lovers of Salil’s classical-influenced compositions.
