Film Information

Language: Hindi

Producer & Director: Rishi Sharma

Atmadaan (1989) was completed and selected for National Panorama but was never released commercially. According to the director, the master print remains locked in the archives, making the film nearly inaccessible today.

Initially, Hrishikesh Mukherjee was the director. Mid-production, he left the project and it was finished by Ambish Sangal and Rameshwari.

The film starred Rameshwari, Sadashiv Amrapurkar, Shanu, Janaki Das, Abhi Bhattacharya and Sumita Sanyal.

Four songs were recorded — one by Bhupinder, one by Antara, and two by Sabita. These were sold to the Jai Mataji label (later T-Series), but no cassette was ever released.

Salil composed the songs, but not the background score. Director Rishi Sharma later expressed disappointment, as he was originally promised big playback names like Lata and Asha — which did not materialize.

Notes & Background

Atmadaan is one of the rarest films associated with Salil Chowdhury — unheard, unseen and unreleased. Only oral accounts and limited documentation survive.

The four recorded songs were never released by Jai Mataji / T-Series, making them one of the most elusive parts of Salil’s catalog.

The background score was done by someone else, making this one of the few films where Salil contributed only the songs.

With the film locked in National Panorama archives, access remains nearly impossible today.
