Film Information

Language: Hindi

Lyrics: Salil Chowdhury

Artap (Hindi version) was planned in 1982 but never completed. Yet Salil composed at least one extraordinary song — at the personal request of Talat Mahmood, who was going through a difficult phase in his career.

The only recording tape containing both versions of this song mysteriously disappeared soon after the session — presumed lost forever.

After decades, the song resurfaced thanks to a private collector, allowing listeners to rediscover one of the last great Talat–Salil collaborations.

Both versions are now also available through Talat Mahmood’s official archive.

Notes & Background

Artap (1982) stands as one of Salil’s “lost films” — never produced, never released, yet holding one of his rarest melodies.

Talat Mahmood personally requested Salil for a song, and Salil, known for generosity, crafted this elegant composition despite the film never materializing.

The rediscovery of this song decades later is almost miraculous — preserved only because a listener suspected its authenticity and safeguarded it for years.
