Notes & Background

Aanand stands among Salil Chowdhury’s most emotionally resonant works. The title music itself is adapted from Shyamal Mitra’s Bengali melody “Ogo Surangana”, originally composed for AIR broadcasts.

“Zindagi kaisi hai paheli” remains one of Manna Dey’s most iconic songs — philosophical, soothing and timeless. A lesser-known fact: Manna Dey often performs an extra antara in concerts which was never included in the film or studio release.

“Kahin door jab din dhal jaaye” is considered one of Mukesh’s greatest performances, blending longing and serenity in Salil’s signature harmonic style.

“Maine tere liye hi saat rang ke sapne” originally had three antaras — only two were used in the film and record versions.

Salil’s subtle Western classical touch, his layered harmonies and Yogesh–Gulzar’s poetic depth make the music of Aanand an eternal favourite across generations.
