Notes & Background

Amaanat (1955) is a treasure for admirers of Salil’s melodic genius. The duet style of Asha and Manna Dey shines most beautifully in “Chhal Chhal Paani” and “Chet Re Moorakh”.

Song AM6 — “Jab tumne mohabbat chheen li” ends abruptly in the film. The full version survives only on the rare 78 RPM HMV disc.

This composition displays striking similarities to another lost Salil masterpiece: “Ulfat ke kaam niraale” (AW9) from the film Awaaz. Both feature:

The early 1950s were a period of experimentation for Salil, and Amaanat stands out as one of his most refined works of that era.
