Agnipareekshaa (1981) contains four of Salil Chowdhury’s most polished early-80s compositions — each marked by intricate orchestration and deeply emotional melodies.

Asha’s return with the romantic “Pyaar hai pyaar” is a standout moment, featuring a superbly layered orchestra in the antara.

“Aaj koyee nahi apnaa” showcases Salil’s genius: bansuri + santoor in the opening, followed by lush strings in the antara — a masterclass in mood-building.

The Bengali versions of these songs (especially AP4) are almost completely re-arranged and stand as independent classics.

Notes & Background

All four songs in Agnipareekshaa stand among Salil’s best Hindi works of the early 1980s. Each melody is refined, emotionally deep and orchestrated with immense care.

Asha’s AP3 is especially noteworthy — one of her finest Salil performances after a long break.

The subtle contrasts between the Hindi and Bengali arrangements show Salil’s constant desire to reinvent, rather than simply translate, his compositions.
