Notes & Background

Paari (1966) is based on a story by the celebrated Bengali writer Jarasandha. The film drew major Bollywood actors Dharmendra and Dilip Kumar, who joined a Bengali production for this unique tragic love story.

A Hindi version, Anokha Milan, was released later in 1972. Dharmendra’s Punjabi looks and Bengali accent did not exactly suit the role, yet the emotional power of the story and strong acting — especially from Dilip Kumar and Abhi Bhattacharya — made the film memorable.

The title music is pure vintage Salil — rich, melodic, and beautifully orchestrated. “Bokul Boner Katha” remains one of Asha Bhonsle’s loveliest Bengali songs. Interestingly, the Hindi version “Manwaa Meri Sakhaa” from Anokha Milan was sung by Sabita Chowdhury instead of Asha.

Hemanta’s “Bondhu Re” begins with a magical flute and sitar prelude over gentle guitar chords — a classic example of Salil’s layered arrangements.

The final track, “Toraa Sundor Saami Paabi”, is based on a traditional Bengali pre-marriage folk song. It was given to Salil by Nirmalaendu Chowdhury, a folk legend and close friend of Salil. Salil modified a few of the lyrics to tone down the naughtier lines of the original!
