Films Never Made

A list of Bengali films associated with Salil Chowdhury that were planned but never completed or released.

Overview

Over the decades, several Bengali film projects were initiated with Salil Chowdhury as composer, writer, or contributor — but never reached completion. Some left behind rare songs; others vanished entirely.

1. Ei Ritur Akdin

Very little is known about this project. The film was planned and discussed, but there is no record of production, music recording, or release.

2. Cholo Kolkataa

Based on a story by Salil Chowdhury. A song titled “Cholo Kolkata” was recorded by Anup Ghosal, but the film never materialized.

In January 2003, Anup Ghosal personally sang the lost song for a researcher. The lyrics reflect Salil's bold commentary on the moral decline of Kolkata — urging people not to abandon their city.

3. Obhisake

No reliable information exists about this film. It was mentioned in early archives, but no recordings, scripts, or production notes have surfaced.

4. Aswamedher Ghodaa (1981)

A planned collaboration with Ritwik Ghatak. It is unclear whether the movie ever reached completion.

The only known trace is that Yesudas reportedly recorded a Hindi song beginning with “Zindagi...”.

Another Hindi version of the same song was recorded for a separate never-made film, “Mitti Ka Dev”, sung by Mukesh.

5. Artap (1982)

Initially planned with both Bengali and Hindi versions. Only one song survives today — “Tup Taap Tup Taap Bristi PoDchhe”, sung by Talat Mehmood.

The master tape containing the Bengali and Hindi versions was lost for decades before resurfacing. Full details are provided on the dedicated Artap (1982) page.
