Notes & Background

The song “Maa Go Amaar”, sung by Sabita Chowdhury, is widely regarded as one of her greatest performances and one of Salil’s most emotionally charged compositions. The rich string arrangements echo Salil’s lifelong admiration for Western classical orchestration, creating a deeply moving atmosphere.

“Horidaasher Bulbul Bhaaja” is adapted from a traditional Bengali folk tune. Hemanta Mukherjee’s rendition is iconic, and he later reused the same folk base (with new lyrics and modified melody) as a composer in the film “Sreeman Prithviraj” (1972).

In the 1980s, Salil’s own label CMR released a rare Subir Sen cassette that included the beautiful composition “Amaar Jibon Toroni”, which bears a strong resemblance to “Aailaam Re Koilkatta”.

This soundtrack showcases Salil’s versatility—blending folk, classical, and modern influences to create timeless melodies that continue to resonate with admirers and collectors.
